WHAT ASHA DOES
ASHA supports men, women and families seeking refuge from persecution, war, civil conflict, torture and abuse.
An asylum seeker is someone whose request for sanctuary has yet to be processed. Many will wait years for an answer and many are sent to live in Stoke-on-Trent. Adults are given an Azure Card worth £35 which will be accepted by a few retailers to buy food, clothing, essential toiletries and credit for mobile phones.
An unsuccessful applicant has all support withdrawn. A majority will not be deported for humanitarian reasons but neither will they be allowed to work or claim benefit. They become destitute, reliant on friends and the kindness of strangers. This group and especially those with children are ASHA’s priority.
