CareLink Telephone Befriender (Volunteer)
CareLink (part of Saltbox) offers free telephone befriending and support to people over 50 who are lonely and isolated. We work to improve the health and wellbeing of older people.
As a CareLink telephone befriender you will be offering friendship and support through regular phone calls to lonely and isolated adults aged 50 and over, who have been referred into our service. Loneliness in older people is a growing problem in our society, as the number of older people grows. You will have the opportunity to be involved in a project which is making a real difference to people’s lives, whilst gaining skills to enhance your CV, and giving something back to your community.
What are we looking for?
You need to have at least 2 or 3 hours a week to spare, be a good listener, and like to chat. You need to be reliable, show good empathy for others, and be able to engage others in conversation. It would be helpful (but not essential) if you have basic IT skills – training can be offered for this.
What will we provide?
You will be given a 4 week induction and training programme and receive ongoing training to help you develop your skills and knowledge. You will have on the ground day to day support from CareLink staff as needed, with regular one to one sessions. All volunteers will have their travel expenses reimbursed, and be offered free drinks and snacks. Those working more than 4 hours can claim back expenses for additional sustenance.
