Cliff Hathaway of our OPEN service was invited to contribute to a presentation made by Dr Amit Arora – consultant geriatrician and clinical lead for geriatric medicine at University Hospital North Staffs.
Dr Arora’s team were nominated for an award in the Health Service Journal Annual Awards competition for delivering the National Deconditioning Awareness and Prevention Campaign.
The pioneering scheme’s aim is to dispel the myths of bed rest as a total solution, and introduces the concept of Sit Up, Get Dressed and Keep Moving. This involves prescribing exercise for patients as part of their recovery in hospital and aids speedy recovery and discharge from hospital.
To see how Dr Arora’s team and the project got Royal approval in March, visit the hospital website.
Dr Arora also gave his presentation to our OPEN Forum on discharge services, which took place in October and included a seated samba dance led by Art Brasil! To see photos from the event, and from the mini forum on barriers to older people engaging with art and culture in the city, got to our Facebook gallery.
