Working with the elderly

The Saltbox has a designated development worker who seeks to network & support faith-based groups who have specific projects for elderly people.

In Stoke-on-Trent there are over 40 such projects, using over 250 volunteers & reaching over 2,000 elderly people each week.

Of the elderly people who access the support of such groups:

  • 60% don’t access services anywhere else
  • many don’t go anywhere else in the week
  • most don’t belong to the worshipping faith group
  • most have no transport

PhoneLink - In 2008, the Saltbox launched PhoneLink, providing a free city-wide telephone-out befriending and support service for the elderly, socially isolated and vulnerable people within our communities - 7 days a week/365 days a year. More about PhoneLink......

Partners in the Saltbox’s work with older people include: Primary Care Trust, Local Strategic Partnership, Social Services, Age Concern, Staffs Fire & Rescue, Warm Zone, Beat the Cold, the Sentinel.

DataLink - In 2007, the Saltbox organised the re-launch of the Data Link scheme. This project is a voluntary scheme for anyone living at home who might be reassured to know that essential information is readily available to the Emergency Services should they suffer an accident or sudden illness in their home.
