Loneliness and isolation, and their negative effects on people’s physical and mental health, are a growing problem in our society. Research tells us that, of the 40,000 over-65-year-olds in Stoke-on-Trent - around ONE THIRD - regularly go most weeks without speaking to another person.
Saltbox is on a mission to prevent that outcome for older people citywide.
CareLink is a free telephone befriending and support service with the aim of improving life for those over 50, who are lonely and isolated, keeping them healthy and independent in their own home as long as possible. Funded by North Staffs and Stoke CCGs and the Staffordshire Community Foundation, the service is available to anybody registered with a Stoke GP who fulfills the criteria.
Another, equally important part of our mission is to help people socialise and reconnect them with the community. We've been fortunate to receive grants from Big Lottery Fund and One Stop Stores to take small groups of service users on heritage trips to different places around the City.
How does the service work?
Our volunteers make over 300 calls each week to nearly 200 CareLink friends, showing that someone is interested in them at a time when they may feel like they are forgotten. The uniquely regular contact that CareLink staff have with clients also allows the to identify health and welfare issues before it becomes a crisis, helping people to access the right support. CareLink is there for however long and whatever reason you need us including:
- Short term (days/weeks): When family or carers are on holiday or unwell themselves
- Medium term (weeks/months): During a period of recovery after an illness or hospital discharge
- Longer term (months/years): As health or confidence declines
